If you are dreaming of working and living in Australia, especially in a regional area, you’ve probably hit a wall with regular visa rules. The DAMA visa Australia pathway might be your solution.

You know the story: the age cap shuts the door at 45, English test scores feel impossible, and the skilled occupation list seems to leave you out, even if you are highly capable.

DAMA Visa Australia

What if we told you there’s a visa pathway that quietly bends the rules, and it’s still wide open in 2025?

Meet DAMA — Australia’s Designated Area Migration Agreement.

It’s your chance to live and work in Australia, even if traditional pathways have ruled you out. And right now, Australia’s DAMA visa program might be your golden ticket.

What Is the DAMA Visa in Australia? And Why Now?

DAMA is a formal agreement between the federal government and specific regional areas in Australia that need workers. Unlike standard skilled migration, DAMA gives these regions extra flexibility to sponsor foreign workers.

Unlike standard skilled visas, the DAMA visa offers greater flexibility and realistic requirements, especially for:

✅ Workers over 45

✅ People who don’t have formal qualifications but real-world experience

✅ Skilled migrants who need lower English test scores

✅ Those looking for a faster PR pathway (some just 2–3 years)

There are now 13 DAMA regions across Australia — from the Northern Territory to South West WA — covering everything from hospitality to healthcare to mining.

Who Should Apply for a DAMA Visa?

If any of this sounds like you, it’s worth exploring the DAMA visa Australia pathway:

✅ You have at least 2 years of relevant work experience (with or without formal degrees)
✅ You are open to working in a regional part of Australia
✅ You’ve considered moving for lifestyle, career stability, or PR
✅ You are facing challenges getting a skilled visa through traditional channels

Bonus: It’s also a great fit for international students or expats already in Australia looking to extend their stay with employer sponsorship.

If you said yes to any of this, keep reading.

How DAMA Visa Works (Without the Legal Jargon)

Here’s the 30-second breakdown:

  1. You check that your job is on a DAMA occupation list

  2. You find an employer in a DAMA region

  3. The employer gets endorsed by the local authority (DAR- Designated Area Representative)

  4. Then the employer requests a labour agreement with the government

  5. You get nominated + apply for the visa (482, 494, or 186)

  6. You arrive and start your new job and life in regional Australia!

The DAMA Visa is for skilled and semi-skilled workers from overseas. It is an employer sponsored Visa. Currently, there are 135 occupations available under DAMA NT.

The head agreement between the Northern Territory and the Commonwealth that governs NT DAMA II has been extended by one year, ensuring its continuity through 13 December 2024.

The extension has some important changes to make it easier for NT employers to access the program. These changes are now in effect and are outlined below:

1. New occupations

The following 11 new occupations have been added to the NT DAMA eligibility list, bringing the total number of eligible occupations to 135:

2. New Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) concession

  • TSMIT concession for certain occupations changed from a 10% reduction to a fixed amount of $55,000 (excluding superannuation and non-monetary benefits).
  • Sponsored workers now require a minimum monetary salary of $55,000.
  • Previous concession types allowing non-monetary benefits no longer apply.
  • Employers must ensure that salaries for overseas workers match or exceed those of equivalent Australian or permanent resident workers (market salary).
  • Sponsored workers with a TSMIT concession must be paid at least $55,000 or the market salary, whichever is higher.
  • For occupations without a TSMIT concession, the sponsored worker must receive a minimum market salary of at least $70,000.

3. Simplified Path to Permanent Residency

          – Must work in an occupation on the NT DAMA eligibility list.

– Need 2 years of full-time work in the NT in the ENS-nominated or closely related occupation.

          – Comply with visa conditions.

          – Subclass 494 visa holders through NT DAMA can access subclass 191 after 3 years in the NT.

  • Existing concessions for English language and age requirements continue to apply
  • The application process for NT DAMA II remains the same

The changes outlined above will apply to labour agreement requests made to the Department of Home Affairs after 2 November 2023. Migration NT will also apply these changes to existing and new endorsement applications.
